Searching for Yellow -
Searching for Yellow -
Through decades of depression and anxiety hovering over my life, I have found patterns. Luckily, these newly discovered patterns sparked insight into what events, experiences, thoughts, etc. might bring moments of relief.
Even with an eternal perspective, every day with anxiety or depression can feel hopeless. But there’s an empowering way to feel lifted and spiritually connected despite the difficulty.
It’s called searching for yellow.
So…What does it mean to search for yellow?
While experiencing depression and anxiety, it can seem impossible to feel the comforting hand of the Holy Ghost. Our minds are clouded with loud, dark emotions and life can often appear hopeless.
Yellow symbolizes these moments of relief. These moments keep us close to Him (despite whether or not we actually feel Him) and keep us ready to feel the spirit again once the depression or anxiety has lifted.
The nitty gritty
“Just look at the positive” some say; “Count your blessings” others say. How I wish it were so simple. Depression and anxiety overwhelm, consume and control our lives. It’s the nature of the beast. They come into our lives, linger, and seem to laugh at our attempts to push them away.
Depression and anxiety effect how much we sleep, eat, and socialize. It toys with our thoughts and reactions. But, do we notice how it effects our scripture reading, prayers and temple attendance as well? I have found huge changes in what I can or cannot spiritually do when I have depression or anxiety. As I have learned what works best for me in varying situations, I have found more opportunity to find yellow in my life. I am more able to see God’s hand in my experiences.
Seeing moments of yellow in our lives - glimpses of relief given to us from Heavenly Father - can provide a much needed breath of air in such suffocating experiences.
The book Searching for Yellow shows how we can find Heavenly Father in our daily lives, even when depression and anxiety prevent us from feeling His spirit.

Stephanie Elg has a refreshingly open and positive approach on how to deal with depression and anxiety as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Not only does she offer her own vulnerable experiences that most who have suffered with anxiety and depression can relate to, but she offers clinically relevant and practical ways of responding to these emotions while seeking a greater closeness to the Spirit. I believe the approach she describes in this book is inspired insight. Her humor, candidness, and intelligence will grasp the attention of any reader!
